Statement by the Nigerian Bar Association Security Agencies Relations Committee on the Abduction of Rukayyat Mustafa, Esq.
The Nigerian Bar Association Security Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC) vehemently condemns the abduction of our colleague, Rukayyat Mustafa, Esq., which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 26 May 2024. It has come to our attention that suspected bandits forcibly entered her residence in Bado, Sokoto, and took Rukayyat, leaving her family and the entire legal community in despair.
This alarming incident underscores the escalating insecurity, emphasizing the urgent need for effective measures to safeguard all citizens. Recent heinous acts, including the brutal murder of Mr. Awa Peter Awa in Anambra State and the kidnapping of Dr. Roland Ipuole in Calabar, Cross River State, further demonstrate a disturbing pattern of targeted attacks that endanger the broader community, not just those dedicated to upholding the law. We urgently demand that the relevant security agencies take immediate and decisive action to ensure Rukayyat’s safe and prompt release and to bring her abductors to justice.
It is imperative that the Nigerian State demonstrates its commitment to protecting its citizens and eradicating the pervasive threat of banditry and violence that has turned many areas into lawless and dangerous zones. The protection of all citizens, including legal practitioners who are integral to maintaining peace and order, must be prioritized to uphold the rule of law and sustain public confidence in our judicial system.
We call on the government to bolster security measures to protect all citizens, particularly those who are most vulnerable to violent attacks and kidnappings. The NBA-SARC stands in solidarity with Rukayyat Mustafa and her family during this distressing period and urges all relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively to restore the safety and security of our nation.
