The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Security Agencies Relations Committee (NBA-SARC) and former Chairman of the NBA Lagos Branch, Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, on Thursday, 25 January 2024 attended the first monthly meeting of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch in 2024.
While rendering his goodwill message to the Branch, Mr. Ikwuazom noted that he was profoundly impressed by the unwavering commitment to professional excellence displayed by the Branch’s leadership. The professional and collegial manner the meeting was conducted, Mr Ikwuazom, SAN noted, was a testament to the Branch’s dedication to fostering a legal community of the highest standards.
In particular, the Learned Silk observed that the knowledge-sharing session addressing the issue of “ambulance chasing* showcased the Branch’s proactive stance on preserving the integrity of our noble profession. “This insightful discussion delved into the nuances of how ambulance chasing devalues the legal practice and erodes the trust placed in legal practitioners”, he stated.
Mr. Ikwuazom, SAN took the opportunity to share insights into the work undertaken by the NBA-SARC in addressing challenges faced by legal practitioners when interfacing with security agencies as they render their professional services. Inviting the NBA Port Harcourt Branch into collaborative efforts, Mr. Ikwuazom, SAN proposed a joint initiative – the planning of a comprehensive town hall meeting for the Eastern Zone of the NBA. This meeting aims to unravel the intricate causes behind the harassment of lawyers by security agencies, both remote and immediate.
“Collaboration between the NBA Port Harcourt Branch and the NBA-SARC promises to yield a powerful synergy, amplifying our collective impact in addressing these critical issues. He expressed his optimism that by fostering dialogue and understanding, we can contribute significantly to the enhancement of the legal profession”, the Learned Senior Advocate added.
Mr. Ikwuazom, SAN expressed his gratitude to the NBA Port Harcourt Branch for providing a platform for such meaningful discourse, and noted that he is looking forward to the prospect of working together with the Branch to advance the interests of our esteemed legal community.
