REPORTED SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT ON THE CONSTITUTIONALITY OF VIRTUAL COURT HEARINGS: A VICTORY FOR THE JUSTICE SECTOR

I read with happiness reports of the recent Supreme Court Judgment giving tacit approval to and affirmation of the constitutionality of virtual court hearings.

I hesitate to say too much on the matter because I am yet to read the full judgment of the apex Court but I am very excited at the prospect that this lingering question may have been laid to rest.

If this is the case, the next step is for us to work out the modalities for making virtual hearings effective.

This decision shows that the Supreme Court is amenable to the application of technology to the justice delivery sector in order to make things easier for all stakeholders.

What we need to do now is to build on this and set a trend that allows us to effectively apply technology to solve as many of the other problems plaguing the justice sector as possible.

To do this, we must all unite. We need a Bench that listens and a Bar that cooperates. All sectors of the profession need to work together.

That way, we can do wonders.

Let’s do better.
