23 December 2018
1. On 19 October 2018, I nominated Ms. Iyabode Ogunseye, a senior member of the Bar and a past chairperson of International Federation of Women Lawyers (“FIDA”), Abuja Chapter, to represent the Nigerian Bar Association (“NBA” or “Association”) and serve as a co-opted member on the Presidential Panel to Investigate alleged complaints of human rights violations and to make recommendations on reforms of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force (“SARS Reforms Presidential Panel” or “SARS Reforms Panel”).
2. As expected, Ms. Ogunseye, soon after her nomination, threw herself into the assignment with customary diligence, focus and gusto. Not uncharacteristically, she has been sending us reports of the SARS Reforms Panel’s sittings and activities. So far, we have received 3 (three) of such detailed Reports from her which we are now publishing with this Statement for the information and records of our members. More of these Reports would be published as we receive them from Ms. Ogunseye.
3. Meanwhile, our members who may have suggestions, comments or information for Ms. Ogunseye that would assist her in representing us at the SARS Reforms Panel should please send such information, comments or suggestions by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org and copied to email@example.com. Hard copies of such information, comments or suggestions may also be addressed to me, as the President of the NBA, and delivered at the NBA National Secretariat, Abuja for the attention of Ms. Iyabode Ogunseye.
4. Finally, on behalf of the NBA, we thank Iyabode for her dedication and commitment not just in this assignment but to the NBA generally. We commend her attitude and verve to all our colleagues. We extend Seasons’ Greetings to all our members in this Season of Goodwill and wish you all a Merry and joyous Christmas and a most prosperous 2019.
