In a bold step towards ensuring universal access to justice, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Garki Branch has launched the Duty Solicitor Scheme (DSS)—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at providing free legal aid to individuals in need of urgent legal representation.
The DSS is designed to address a wide range of legal issues, ensuring that individuals seeking access to justice in the face of arrest, detention, or trial receive timely legal support. The scheme will serve as a platform for legal advocacy, civic engagement, and public awareness, reinforcing the commitment of NBA Garki Branch to the protection of fundamental human rights.
According to Anthony Bamidele Ojo, Esq., Chairman of NBA Garki Branch, the DSS represents a strategic intervention aimed at bridging the gap between legal services and those most in need.
“Access to justice should not depend on financial status or connections. The Duty Solicitor Scheme is our commitment to ensuring that no individual is left without legal representation at crucial moments that affect their rights and liberties,” Ojo stated.
The NBA Garki Branch Duty Solicitor Scheme incorporates Police Duty Solicitors, Court Duty Solicitors and other Duty Solicitors available to attend to urgent matters that require immediate expert intervention to uphold due process and constitutional rights.
Heading the Duty Solicitor Scheme is Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe, Esq., a legal practitioner with a strong background in criminal justice, human rights, and legal advocacy. Under his leadership, the DSS is expected to strengthen legal support systems, promote due process, and protect vulnerable individuals from rights violations.
With the launch of the DSS, the NBA Garki Branch has once again reaffirmed its role as a leading advocate for legal reform and human rights protection. The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to improve access to justice, reduce case backlogs, and prevent the exploitation of vulnerable individuals in the legal system.
