As the bar election approaches, we are faced with the somewhat difficult decision of choosing who succeeds Y. C. Maikiau SAN as the next president. This apparent difficulty is posed by the fact that we have three fine gentlemen vying for that lofty position. We have to choose the finest.
Incidentally, I had made up my mind long ago, not only to vote for CHUKWUKA IKWUAZOM, SAN, but also to put in my best to ensure he becomes the president.
My reasons are not far-fetched. A mentor of mine introduced me to Bro Chuka (that is what I call him) some ten years ago. He had not come into the NBA political limelight then, and that offered me the ample opportunity to dispassionately assess his person, in several ways.
Of all things, what strike me most are his superlative intelligence, his calm unassuming mien and his attention to granular details. When he became the Chairman of Lagos bar, he crowned it all with his stellar reformatory performance. Despite Ikwuazom’s busy schedule from the first day I came close to him, there has been no time I called him and he failed to answer. Even when he missed my calls, he would ensure he returned the calls.
Based on these rare qualities of a leader, I have continued to pitch my tent with Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, and also urge all lawyers who mean well for the Nigerian Bar to cast their votes for him on 20th July, 2024. I have no doubt that his administration will usher in a brighter future for the Nigerian Bar and Nigerian Lawyers, especially the young ones.
