The Notice of the Lagos NBA Meeting for November had stated the time as 2:00 p.m.

I got to the High Court’s foyer at 1:50 p.m.

The meeting started at 2:40 p.m. when the Lagos NBA Chairman called the meeting to order. He called on Mr. Busari, SAN to give the opening prayer. The Chairman welcomed members and apologized for the late starting of the meeting. He explained the reason for starting the meeting late. He stated that there was an awareness walk and some executive members had to be there. He further stated that he was in court with some colleagues with the NBA President, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN and the proceedings took sometime before they were done.

Minutes of the Last Meeting

The minutes of the last meeting was examined and there was neither correction nor amendment made to same. The minutes was adopted.

Matters Arising

Proposed Rules – It appeared there was some discrepancy as to what transpired at the last meeting and the report given to the Chairman in respect of the proposed rules. As the deliberation was going on, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN walked into the meeting. There was a moment of pause as some members acknowledged his presence and a round of murmurs went through the foyer. Eventually, the meeting continued. The Chairman used the opportunity to recognize the senior members of the Bar present at the meeting amongst who was the 1st Vice-President of the NBA, Dr. Foluke Dada. On the proposed rules, it was concluded that the Branch should not waste any further time but make recommendations to the necessary judiciary committee on the proposed rules.

Treasurer’s Report

The Treasurer gave her report and members were allowed to ask questions and make comments. Some few comments were made. The President of the NBA, Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN also made comments that the Branch should keep on with the culture of accountability.

Annual Bar Dinner – the Chairman of the Committee stated that this year’ dinner will take place at Harbour Point, 4, Wilmot Road, Off Ahmadu Bello Street, Victoria Island on the 13th December 2018. He stated that cocktail and red carpet starts at 5:00 p.m. and dinner at 6:00 p.m.

He urged members to come and unwind after the year’s hard work.

Knowledge Sharing Session

Mr. Tobe took the floor to introduce the guest speaker for the day. He took about five minutes to read out the resume of the guest speaker, Mrs. Doyin Rhodes-Vivour. I had expected that we would be discussing Arbitration but the topic of the day was “The Language and Conduct of the Bar”.

Mrs. Rhodes-Vivour made the topic very interesting as she managed to add some bit of feminist angle to the first set of points in her presentation. She related her experience in practice on the topic. The presentation was engaging.

The Chairman called on the President of the NBA to thank Mrs. Rhodes-Viviour for the presentation and a former Chairman of the Branch, Mr. Alex Muoka to thank the host of the day’s meeting, Mr. Babatunde Kasunmu on behalf of members.

Any Other Matter

The Foyer – the Chairman stated that the Chief Judge of Lagos State had directed that the Branch’s meeting should commence at 2:30 p.m. and he threw the matter open for members to discuss. One view was that we should get another place but the issue of cost was raised on the suggestion. Another view was that we should get senior members of the Bar to discuss the matter with the Chief Judge. It was concluded that other venues and the costs would be checked out and further discussions would be held with the Chief Judge on the matter.

Human Rights Committee Report – the Vice-Chairman briefly summarized the report of the committee and what was achieved by the committee for the year. She stated that over sixty inmates were helped to regain their freedom during the year.

The meeting came to a close at 4:47 p.m. with closing prayer by the 1st Vice-President of the NBA.
