As an in-house counsel and a proud member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), I have often observed that the unique needs and concerns of in-house counsel have been overlooked by the leadership at both the Branch and national levels. The focus has traditionally been on the interests of private legal practitioners, leaving in-house counsel on the periphery.
However, this dynamic changed when Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, assumed the role of Chairman of the Lagos Bar. His tenure was marked by inclusivity and an unprecedented consideration for in-house counsel. For the first time, our views and concerns were not only heard but also acted upon. Mr. Ikwuazom recognized the strategic importance of in-house counsel within the corporate world and leveraged our unique positions to foster deeper institutional support and engagement for the Branch. This symbiotic relationship built a valuable bridge between in-house lawyers and the general Bar, providing those of us in the corporate world with a profound sense of belonging and mutual respect.
The success of Mr. Ikwuazom’s tenure can be attributed to his dual expertise as both a disputes and corporate lawyer. His ability to straddle both worlds allowed him to bring a balanced perspective to the leadership, effectively addressing the diverse needs of the legal community. His visionary approach has significantly enhanced the cohesion and understanding between in-house counsel and private practitioners.
It is this exemplary leadership and inclusive vision that convinces me that the NBA needs Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, at its helm. His balanced and beneficial approach is precisely what is required to ensure that the NBA continues to grow as a unified and dynamic body. For these reasons, I wholeheartedly endorse Mr. Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, for the position of President of the Nigerian Bar Association. I am confident that his leadership will bring about the positive change and inclusive growth that our association needs.
