The news has been brought to my notice that the members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Aba Branch, had an Emergency General Meeting on 27/3/2020 because Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna of the NBA, Aba Branch was arrested, arraigned and remanded in a correctional facility on a spurious charge.
This is coming at a time the Nigerian Correctional Service is trying it’s best to reduce the numbers of people held at the Correctional Facilities. This is most insensitive when the country is battling to curtail the spread of the Corona Virus and also amounts to breach of our colleague’s fundamental human rights.
I therefore join my colleagues in Aba to condemn in very strong terms the arbitrary manner of the arrest, arraignment and detention in prison custody on Tuesday, 24/3/2020 of Emperor Gabriel Ogbonna.
