Some of the pieces of training that betters a lawyer may never be related to law. Such was the training I attended on Saturday where I was educated that my customers could either be internal or external. The task started with identifying who were my internal/external customers as a lawyer/law firm.
- Internal clients are those I serve directly; those who directly brief me for a service.
- External clients are those who are affected when I serve my direct clients. Indirect clients are also the clients I serve by proxy (through a brief from another lawyer, body or person).
How I serve my direct clients would determine what they say about me to the indirect clients.
The client can be the internal customer and the court the external customer. The company may be the internal customer while the directors and staff are the external customers. The internal customer may the colleague that wants you to do a job for him while the colleague’s client is your external customer.
My goal is always to ensure that my internal customers get fully satisfied. When I do this, the external customer gets impressed and may come directly to me in the future, or recommend me to others.
Your direct clients matter a lot. However, the other people your service will affect and the people who will hear of your service also matter a lot too. What they hear, and the impression they get would determine if they would come directly or not.
